Tom Kirk is an Aboriginal man of the Gurreng Gurreng - Western Burnett River district QLD.  

Born in Brisbane he grew up around the Aboriginal Communities of Cherbourg and Woorabinda and at the country town of Duaringa.

Highly skilled in Cross-Cultural Communication, Tom has over 30 years experience having facilitated programs across Australia since 1993.


2 HOUR PROGRAM

Classic Aboriginal Societies

  • Introducing the unique & successful cultural practices of Heterarchial societies.


Kinship

  • The relationship structure that people use to define their relationships with others and connections to land.


Culture & Communication

  • Presenting culture and the role that culture plays in communication.  


  • Exploring principles that assist in managing difference without managing differently.


Land & People 

  • What determines a person's connection to Land/Country from the 'classic' time to today.  From arranged marriage patterns to modern day bloodline complexities.


Cultural Timeline 

  • Presenting some major milestones from the 'classic' to contact & displacement, the '67 referendum, through to today & looking forward.

Includes all 5 options of a 2hr program plus a compelling 1hr interactive exercise.


Culture, Kinship & Community

  • A hypothetical interactive exercise that explores and compares the structures of First Nations societies prior to and since non-Indigenous contact.  


  • The diverse nature of those societies, the importance of Kinship systems and Community structures.


  • The historical and contemporary relationships which exist between First Nations peoples and new Australians are all viewed from a very different perspective in this interactive exercise.

Finding a Way Forward


  • In cafe type room settings particpants examine some of the major barriers to effective communication across cultures and what strategies we need to develop to overcome them.


  • Identifying how we can do things more effectively in our cross cultural dealings.
